Evening Standard: Things to do in Verona
Evening Standard London
Terrazza Bar Al Ponte (00 39 45 927 5032; terrazzabaralponte.eu) is right on the bend in the Adige river, looking out over the Ponte Pietra — a bridge so beloved that when it was damaged in the Second World War, locals fished out all the stone from the water so it could be remade as it was before. The bar serves simple food — gnocchi with bacon and rosemary or mortadella and salami sandwiches — and has a pretty impressive selection of wines from the region and further north.
But it’s all about the small, ivy-lined terrace outside, overlooking the Ponte Pietra and the ruins of the Teatro Romano on the opposite bank. And you know it’s full of locals because they’re all ignoring the wines in favour of an Aperol spritz.
